THE Lusaka City Council says it will only allow 15 burials per day at each cemetery to reduce overcrowding in view of the Covid 19 pandemic. The council has since suspended the use of cemetery shelters for church service and body viewing.
LCC public relations manager Mwaka Nakweti said in a statement to Mwebantu that the move has been necessitated by the need to reduce the number of people gathering at the shelters waiting for their turn to conduct body viewing of their lost loved ones.
“Because of the increase in the number of burials per day, mourners were forced to wait their turn to use the cemetery shelters and this to a large extent was causing delay in burying their loved ones.As a control measure, only 15 burials are allowed per day per cemetery to reduce on overcrowding in view of the Covid 19 pandemic ” she said
Ms Nakweti said the local authority has continued conducting compliance checks at the cemeteries.
She said mourners are therefore advised to follow the five golden rules of Covid 19 prevention as they bury their loved ones.
Ms Nakweti further disclosed that in the last one week, the council issued 807 burial permits.
